Well...doing the math...6 gallons at 1.077 is actually a little better efficiency than 1.085 at 5 gallons.

Looking at your gravity points in relation to your volume:

6 gallons x 77 gravity points = 462 gravity points extracted from your mash.

5 gallons x 85 gravity points = 425 gravity points extracted from your mash.

What was the recipe, if you don't mind me asking?

This class, 3 of the participants called and said they were staying home cause of weather..but The one that showed was only doing extract kits..and stayed tilll i had it in carboy...We did the Bastogne Ale and the recipe called for 18.25 pounds of grain..so my effiency was not up as usual...i was suppose to get 1.085 and only got 1.077..but i did end with 6 gallons instead of 5.....i did have to start with two pots boiling as i used 10 gallons to mash.. My carboy is pretty full and i was worried about blow off this morning..but not the krausen was 3 inches thick right up to the neck..And into the 65 degree room it went....The yeast starter must have done its job..and this will be the first of the saved yeast...Jeff
