They are very hardy and grow well here. You need to build a trellis or what i do is use twine on a pulley system (or am going to build again now that I've moved again). That way they are easy to harvest. You'll have to try to keep them out of major wind, but with some sort of trellis, they will vine up to 15 ft the first year and likely more after that.

They are poisonous to dogs, so keep that in mind. I don't know that a dog would just eat them on his own though. But something to be aware of. Each year the rhizome is cut to the ground too, so you don't have to worry about damage to the vine over the winter.

I'm curious to grow my own hops this year.. I have large garden at home that I could free up space to accomodate some hop buds.. I live up in the NE area of bismarck and it get a little windy up there during the summer months... A few questions come to mind, how do Hops fair with high wind situations?? and would I be better off planting in large pots protected from the wind?? what are most of you doing for your plantings?
