There is a really thorough video here of rehydrating yeast: http://www.ehow.com/video_4436698_rehydrating-yeast-home-brew-blonde.html

I'll agree with Mike that Nottingham is a very solid yeast to use. For best results, rehydrate it first before pitching. Good luck on the 1st brew. Very exciting!

That's exactly right. Once you're comfortable with kits, you can always do your own partial mash recipes. Just move at the pace you're comfortable with.

I haven't used that specific kit, but I can tell you what I think based on the picture you've got. First off, the dry yeast, Nottingham, is a good dry yeast. Some kits have crappier dry yeast, but at least that aspect is all right. I've never been a fan of liquid malt extract over dry malt extract, but when you're using a kit that's sort of a non-issue anyway. Everythying else I see there is about par for the course, so if you want to do an amber, I'd say this is no better or worse than any other comparable kit out there. Is the price right?

has anyone tried the following kit? i haven't found anyone who has heard of it, wondering if it is a good kit.

from the home brewers out post:

Alpine Amber Beer Kit

A medium bodied American amber ale with a rich caramel flavor and well balanced bitterness. American amber ales are similar to pale ales that tend to balance towards caramel maltiness rather then hop bitterness.

You really can't beat the quality and simplicity of one of our Original Beer Kits with Steeping Grains. All the ingredients (except water) that you need to brew and bottle 5 gallons of distinctive homebrew are packed in one box. Just pick your favorite style and start brewing.

Kit includes:

Complete Instructions
7 pounds of amber liquid malt extract
12 ounces of specialty grains
2 ounces of hop pellets
Yeast
Muslin hop and grain bags
50 bottle caps
Priming sugar
