| Thanks guys - I had a couple minutes to check out byo.com and that was exactly what I'm looking for. I was poking around in Beersmith and trying to find descriptions if you didn't know what you were looking for seemed clumsy at best. I'll have to look at mrmalty.com too. @Jamie - you mean an old fashioned paper catalog? people still send them out? I didn't even think of checking into that Thanks again guys! | |

| Jamil Z. has the site below. he helps with pitching rates, has a chart for different strains to compare between white labs and wyeast. other items on this site are helpful. including starters, and a pitch rate calculator http://www.mrmalty.com/don't forget to ask beerdealer (WWnH) he has info on this stuff as well. i hope you have some great brews! | |

| Also go to midwest supplies online (or call) & order a catalog. In there, they have hops & their characteristics along with different yeasts (dry & liquid). That's what I used until I got Beersmith which is a GREAT investment for $21 in my opinion. There you can make your own recipes, use the ones in there, convert from extract to all grain or vise vera. I LOVE it & has been a great tool for me. | |

| I would be happy to lend you a couple of books I have that may provide a good reference for you. The first, Brewing Classic Styles, will give you a baseline for 80+ different styles of beer, what to look for, characteristics of the style, etc. I also have the How to Brew book, as well as a few others you may find helpful. As far as hops goes, a quick an easy reference as to some of the characteristics of the hops can be found on lots of websites: http://www.byo.com/resources/hops for example. http://www.byo.com/resources/hopsLet me know if I can be of assistance. Cheers! | |

| My first batch was a kit; for my second batch, I'd like to base the recipe on one of these Brewer's Best kits: American AmberRed AleI'd like to stick to extracts for now, mainly because of time, convenience and a 3 gallon brew pot on an electric stove. I'd like to try a liquid yeast this time, just to expand my horizons, which brings me to my question: Is there a good reference for yeast & hops? I Wyeast has a decent website and I think I found what I'm looking for. Are there other companies I should be looking at? How about the hops? I poked around in Beersmith and found some hops that will work, but are there guidelines as to which hops work for the various styles? --Tyler | |
